History

Established in 1699
Lower Bridge Street in Chester has a rich history dating back to Roman times, when it was a main axis of the fortress of Deva, leading to the river crossing.
During the medieval period, it was a principal route to North Wales and part of the unique Chester Rows.
The street evolved through the centuries, with 18th-century Georgian architecture and late 19th/early 20th-century vernacular revival black and white buildings also being added.
The Townhouse was built in 1699 by John Mather, a respected lawyer, this elegant Georgian townhouse was originally constructed as a grand family residence.
Over the years, it evolved with the city. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Lower Bridge Street bustled with merchants and traders, whilst families like the Mathers lived above. Later, it became The Chester Lodge guesthouse, welcoming visitors eager to explore Chester’s heritage.
Today, beautifully restored as The Chester Townhouse Hotel, it blends timeless Georgian charm with modern comfort, continuing a tradition of hospitality that has lasted over 300 years.
Family-run hospitality delivering Chester’s warmest welcome
At The Chester Townhouse, customers come first, always. We’re a tight, family-run team of fewer than 15, which means the details are noticed, and we help when you need it. Breakfast is our pride and joy (and, yes, the best in Chester): locally sourced plates with Pen-y-Lan Pork sausages, Christleton Farm eggs, and proper produce from nearby makers.
All our staff are prepped with Chester recommendations so please ask them where to head for dinner if your struggling.
As we are a family-run business we know how special our furry friends are, we are one of the very few hotels in Chester that is dog friendly. If your planning a break why not bring your four-legged friend.
